The Arkansas Gas Tax Calculator shows how much excise tax is baked into the fuel you buy in Arkansas. Most drivers never see it itemized, but every gallon carries a fixed Arkansas state excise (about 24.7 cents per gallon on gasoline) plus the federal excise of 18.4 cents per gallon. This tool lets you see the tax on a single fill-up, or your total annual fuel tax based on how far you drive and your fuel economy.
How it works
Fuel excise taxes are charged per gallon, not as a percentage of price, so they do not change when pump prices rise or fall. The combined rate is simply the state rate plus the federal rate:
- Gasoline: ~24.7 cents (state) + 18.4 cents (federal) = ~43.1 cents per gallon
- Diesel: ~28.5 cents (state) + 24.4 cents (federal) = ~52.9 cents per gallon
In tank mode, the tool multiplies your gallons by the combined rate. In mileage mode, it first converts miles to gallons using your MPG, then applies the same per-gallon rate:
gallons = miles_per_year / mpg
fuel_tax = gallons x (state_rate + federal_rate)
Example and notes
A 15-gallon fill-up of gasoline carries about $6.47 in combined excise tax. Driving 12,000 miles a year in a 30-MPG car burns 400 gallons, so your annual gasoline tax is roughly $172. Diesel costs more per gallon in tax, so a diesel pickup at the same mileage pays noticeably more.
These excise taxes fund roads and bridges. They are separate from any general sales tax and from your vehicle registration fees. Rates can change, so confirm current figures with the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration if you need precision.
