Baby Name Generator (Scandinavian)

Norse and Nordic names with ancient roots

Ad placeholder (leaderboard)

Scandinavian names ring with the sound of the sagas — gods, nature, and Viking-age strength. This tool gathers genuine Old Norse and modern Nordic names from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland, each paired with its meaning, so you can explore options rooted in real heritage.

How it works

Each name is stored with a gender tag and a meaning note drawn from Old Norse or the modern Nordic languages. When you choose a gender and generate, the tool filters the list, shuffles the matches with an unbiased Fisher–Yates pass, and shows your requested count. Many names trace directly to mythology — Freya (“lady”, the goddess of love) and Thor (“thunder”) — while others describe nature or virtue.

Tips and notes

  • The Nordic letters å, ø, and æ are usually anglicised abroad (Bjørn becomes Bjorn); decide which spelling your documents will use.
  • Names ending in -frid (“peace”), -bjorn (“bear”), and -gunn (“battle”) reveal common Norse name-building elements.
  • For saga or fantasy characters, pair a meaning to the role: a leader might be Sigrid (“victory, beautiful”), a wanderer Leif (“heir, descendant”).
