Boston employers must pay at least the Massachusetts statewide minimum wage of $15.00 an hour, with overtime for long weeks. This calculator turns your hours into weekly and annual gross pay, handles overtime correctly, and applies the state’s tipped-worker rules.

How it works

For a standard worker, pay splits into regular hours (up to 40) and overtime hours (over 40, paid at 1.5x):

regular_pay  = min(hours, 40) * rate
overtime_pay = max(hours - 40, 0) * rate * 1.5
weekly_gross = regular_pay + overtime_pay

For tipped workers, Massachusetts permits a $6.75 service rate, but tips must top earnings up to the full $15.00 minimum. The tool computes base pay at the service rate plus tips, then checks whether the combined hourly figure reaches $15.00. If not, an employer top-up is required. Overtime is calculated on the full minimum wage to remain on the employee-favorable side.

Tips and example

A standard worker logging 45 hours earns 40 hours at $15.00 ($600) plus 5 overtime hours at $22.50 ($112.50), for a $712.50 weekly gross. A tipped server on the $6.75 service rate who reports $9 per hour in tips earns $15.75 per hour combined, comfortably above the $15.00 floor, so no top-up is owed. All figures are gross; subtract federal tax, the Massachusetts 5% income tax, and payroll withholding for take-home pay.
