Western Character Name Generator

Rugged frontier names for cowboys and outlaws

Ad placeholder (leaderboard)

Wild West characters need names that feel weathered and earned. This generator pairs authentic 1800s first names with frontier-flavoured surnames, with an optional gunslinger nickname for outlaws and gunfighters.

How it works

The tool keeps three pools: gendered first names common in 19th-century America, frontier surnames drawn from trades and rugged descriptors, and a list of classic gunslinger epithets. When you generate, it filters first names by your chosen gender, shuffles each pool with an unbiased Fisher-Yates pass, and joins one first name with one surname. If the nickname toggle is on, an epithet is inserted in quotes between them, producing names like Jedediah "Doc" Cooper.

Tips and example

  • For a stoic sheriff, skip the nickname and use a plain pairing such as Samuel Holloway.
  • For an outlaw, enable the nickname: Cole “Black” Rourke reads as a wanted man.
  • Mix and match by regenerating a few times, then swap a surname you like onto a first name you prefer for full control.
