This calculator computes the exact sales tax on a Charlotte purchase by combining North Carolina’s state rate with Mecklenburg County and transit taxes. It also handles the reduced grocery rate.
How it works
The tax is the purchase amount times the applicable rate, and the total adds it back on:
tax = amount * (rate / 100)
total = amount + tax
General goods use the combined 7.25% rate (state 4.75% + county/transit 2.5%). Qualifying unprepared groceries use the reduced 2.0% local food rate instead.
Example
A $100 general purchase is taxed at 7.25%, adding $7.25 for a $107.25
total. The same $100 in unprepared groceries is taxed at 2.0%, adding only
$2.00 for a $102.00 total.
Notes
The 7.25% rate covers standard taxable goods. Prepared food, dining, and certain services can carry additional local taxes, and some items are exempt. Verify unusual cases with the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
