Chicago sets its own minimum wage above the Illinois state floor, currently 15.80 dollars per hour for most workers. This calculator turns your hours into gross weekly and annual pay, correctly splitting out overtime and handling the tipped minimum cash wage.
How it works
Overtime in Illinois is weekly: any hours beyond 40 are paid at 1.5 times the regular rate.
regular hours = min(hours, 40)
overtime hours = max(hours − 40, 0)
gross/week = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × 1.5
gross/year = gross/week × 52
For tipped workers, the employer may pay a lower cash minimum and rely on a tip credit to reach the full minimum; if tips fall short, the employer must make up the difference. The tool shows both the cash wage and the tip credit required.
Example and tips
A standard worker at 15.80 dollars who works 45 hours earns 40 hours at 15.80 (632 dollars) plus 5 overtime hours at 23.70 (118.50 dollars), for 750.50 dollars that week. Remember that Illinois has no daily overtime rule, so a single long shift does not trigger overtime unless your weekly total clears 40 hours. Always confirm the current Chicago rate and your employer-size category, as the minimum is adjusted annually.
