Underwater City Name Generator

Aquatic city names for ocean-world settings

Ad placeholder (leaderboard)

Underwater settlements have a vocabulary all their own — the abyssal dark of the hadal trenches, the luminous bloom of a coral reef, the silent halls of a drowned Atlantis. This generator blends genuine oceanographic terms with structural words to build city names that sound like they belong fathoms beneath the surface.

How it works

Each mood carries its own prefix, core, and suffix banks. The deep abyssal mood draws on terms like Bathy, Hadal, and Marianas; the coral mood uses Nautilus, Pearl, and Reef; the sunken-ruins mood reaches for Atlan, Drowned, and Cthonic. The generator picks one part from each bank, joins them, tidies any double spacing, and capitalises the result — producing names such as Bathytrench or Atlantis Below. Duplicates inside a batch are removed.

Tips and notes

  • Real depth-zone words — hadal, bathyal, pelagic — instantly signal how deep your city sits, from sunlit shallows to the crushing trenches.
  • The sunken-ruins mood pairs well with a tragic backstory: a city that sank rather than one that was built underwater changes the whole tone of a setting.
  • For an engineered habitat, suffixes like -Alpha or Station make it read as a planned research outpost rather than a mythic kingdom.
