This calculator turns an hourly rate and weekly hours into gross pay using Indiana’s $7.25 minimum wage, which applies across Indianapolis. It splits pay into regular and overtime hours and checks tipped-worker math against the minimum.
How it works
The first 40 hours pay the base rate; hours beyond 40 pay 1.5 times the rate. Tipped workers must reach the full minimum through cash wage plus tips:
regular_hours = min(hours, 40)
overtime_hours = max(hours - 40, 0)
gross = regular_hours * rate + overtime_hours * rate * 1.5
tipped check: cash_wage + tips must be >= 7.25, else employer owes the gap
Example
At $7.25/hour for 45 hours: 40 regular hours pay 40 * 7.25 = $290 and 5
overtime hours pay 5 * 7.25 * 1.5 = $54.38, for $344.38 gross. A tipped
worker earning a $2.13 cash wage needs at least $5.12 in hourly tips to reach
the $7.25 minimum.
Notes
This shows gross pay before taxes. Overtime is based on a single workweek over 40 hours. Some workers are exempt from overtime, and Indiana ties its minimum to the federal rate. Confirm specifics with the Indiana Department of Labor.
