Indonesian Reading Time Estimator

Estimate reading time at Indonesian reading speed (~230 wpm)

Estimates how long Indonesian text takes to read using Bahasa Indonesia reading-speed benchmarks (~230 wpm), more accurate than the English default. Free and instant in your browser.

What reading speed does this use?

The default is 230 words per minute, a typical adult silent-reading speed for Bahasa Indonesia. You can switch to 180 wpm for careful study reading or 300 wpm for skimming.

The Indonesian Reading Time Estimator tells you how long a passage of Bahasa Indonesia will take to read. Unlike generic tools that assume English reading speeds, it uses an Indonesian-calibrated default of about 230 words per minute, giving content creators, teachers, and students a far more realistic figure.

How it works

The estimate is a simple, transparent formula:

reading_time_minutes = word_count / words_per_minute

The tool counts words by splitting your text on whitespace and keeping only tokens that contain letters, so punctuation and stray symbols do not inflate the count. Hyphenated reduplication like anak-anak counts as one word. It then divides by your chosen speed — 180 wpm for careful study reading, 230 wpm for an average adult, or 300 wpm for skimming — and formats the result in menit and detik.

Example

A 460-word article at the average rate of 230 wpm takes 460 / 230 = 2 minutes. The same article skimmed at 300 wpm takes about 1 minute 32 seconds.

Tips

  • For instructional or technical Indonesian, choose the careful 180 wpm rate.
  • Reading-time labels like “2 menit baca” improve engagement on blogs and news pages.
  • Combine with the Indonesian Word Counter to verify the underlying word total.
