Iowa does not charge a flat tag fee like some states. Instead it blends the vehicle’s value and its weight into an annual registration fee that falls as the car ages. This calculator reproduces that formula so you can estimate what you will owe at renewal.
How it works
The Iowa annual fee has two parts that are added together:
Value fee = 1% of list price × age factor
Weight fee = (weight in lb ÷ 100) × $0.40
Annual fee = value fee + weight fee
The age factor is 100% for model years 1 through 5, 75% for years 6 through 11, and for vehicles 12 model years and older the value portion becomes a flat $50. The weight fee of 40 cents per hundred pounds applies at every age.
Example
A five-year-old car with a $30,000 list price and 3,500-pound weight owes a value fee of 1% of $30,000 ($300) plus a weight fee of 35 × $0.40 ($14), for an annual registration of about $314. At twelve years old the value portion drops to the $50 flat amount, bringing the fee down to roughly $64.
Notes
This estimate excludes the one-time 5% fee for new registration charged at purchase and any local processing fees. List price means the manufacturer’s suggested retail price used by the Iowa DOT, not what you paid. Confirm exact figures at iowadot.gov.
