Registering a vehicle in Kansas combines a flat weight-based registration fee with a county personal-property tax, which is why two neighbors can pay very different totals. This calculator adds the registration, title, plate, and property-tax lines so you can estimate your bill at the county treasurer.
How it works
Kansas sets the annual passenger-vehicle registration fee by weight:
4,500 lbs or under : ~$30 / year
over 4,500 lbs : ~$40 / year
On top of that, a one-time title fee (about 10 dollars) applies when you first title the vehicle, a small plate fee applies when a new plate is issued, and the county adds an annual personal-property tax based on your vehicle’s value, age, and the local mill levy. Because the property tax varies so much by county, this tool lets you enter your own estimate.
Example
For a passenger car under 4,500 pounds being titled for the first time: a 30 dollar registration fee, a 10 dollar title fee, a small plate fee, and a county property-tax estimate of, say, 250 dollars give a total around 291 dollars at the treasurer’s window.
Notes
These are typical Kansas figures and estimates only. Registration fees can include county-specific service charges, and the personal-property tax depends entirely on your county and vehicle value. Sales tax on the purchase is billed separately. Confirm with your county treasurer or the Kansas Department of Revenue (ksrevenue.gov).
