The combined sales tax rate in the City of Los Angeles is 10.25%. That figure is built from California’s statewide base of 7.25% plus about 3.00% in Los Angeles County district transaction taxes. This calculator applies the real combined rate, works in both Add and Remove directions, and lets you model California’s grocery exemption.
How it works
The tool runs two formulas locally in your browser.
Add mode — you enter a pre-tax price and it applies the combined rate:
Total tax = Pre-tax price x 0.1025 Total = Pre-tax price + Total tax
Remove (reverse) mode — you enter a tax-inclusive total and it extracts the pre-tax base:
Pre-tax = Total / 1.1025 Tax included = Total - Pre-tax
The result splits the tax into the California state portion (7.25%) and the Los Angeles district portion (3.00%) so you can see where the money goes. If you mark the item as an exempt grocery, the taxable rate drops to 0% and no tax is charged.
California rate structure
California’s 7.25% statewide rate is itself a combination of a 6.00% state rate and a 1.25% uniform local rate. On top of that, Los Angeles County voters have approved district taxes (Measure H, Measure M, and others) that add roughly 3.00% inside the City of Los Angeles, reaching the headline 10.25%.
Worked example
A laptop priced at $1,200 in Los Angeles:
- CA state tax: $1,200 x 0.0725 = $87.00
- LA district tax: $1,200 x 0.0300 = $36.00
- Total tax: $123.00
- Total paid: $1,323.00
Note: District rates vary slightly by exact location within LA County; unincorporated areas and other cities may differ from the City of Los Angeles 10.25%. Verify with the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (cdtfa.ca.gov) for an exact address.
