This calculator checks whether a Mesa, Arizona rental fits your budget using the widely used 30%-of-income guideline. It compares your chosen rent to your income and benchmarks against Mesa’s median one-bedroom rent of about $1,200.

How it works

Income is converted to a monthly figure, then compared to rent:

monthly income = annual / 12, or the monthly figure directly
ratio = rent / monthly income
max rent       = monthly income * 0.30
verdict        = <=30% affordable, 30-50% cost-burdened, >50% severe

Example

A $4,000 monthly income gives a max recommended rent of 4000 * 0.30 = $1,200. Renting a $1,200 unit is a ratio of exactly 30% — right at the affordability line. A $1,600 unit would be 1600 / 4000 = 40%, cost-burdened.

Notes

The 30% rule uses gross income by convention and excludes utilities. Mesa’s median 1-BR rent of roughly $1,200 is a starting point; central or newer units cost more. Adjust the rent and income fields for an answer tailored to you.
