Norse Mythology Name Generator

Viking and Norse deity-inspired names

Norse mythology gives us some of the most evocative names in fantasy, from the thunder-god Thor to the world-serpent Jormungandr and the shieldmaiden Lagertha. This free generator draws authentic names from across the Norse tradition — the Aesir and Vanir gods, the jotnar giants, the Valkyries, and the heroes of the sagas — and pairs each with a short, accurate note.

How it works

The tool keeps curated lists organised by the major groupings of Norse myth. When you click Generate:

  1. It builds a pool from your chosen category, or merges every category if you select All of myth.
  2. It draws one entry at random using the browser’s cryptographic random source.
  3. It shows the name alongside a one-line descriptor drawn from the Eddas and saga sources.

So choosing Giants might give you “Surtr — fire giant who burns the world at Ragnarok”, while Valkyries might give you “Brynhildr — foremost of the Valkyries”.

Tips and example

  • Match the category to your purpose: Aesir for principal gods and patrons, jotnar for primal threats, heroes and shieldmaidens for mortal protagonists.
  • The descriptor doubles as a research note — choosing “Heimdall” for a watchman or “Bragi” for a bard reinforces the role.
  • The Aesir and Vanir reflect two divine families; mixing them can suggest a setting that bridges war and fertility, sky and sea.
  • Norse names are public domain, so use them freely in fiction and games. Everything runs locally and privately, so reroll as often as you like.
