What is the car sales tax rate in Nevada?

Nevada's base state sales tax is 6.85%, and counties add local rates on top. Combined rates range from about 6.85% in the lowest-tax counties to roughly 8.375% in Clark County (Las Vegas), so your exact rate depends on where you register.

The Nevada car sales tax calculator estimates the sales tax you will owe on a vehicle purchase. Nevada starts with a 6.85% state rate and each county layers its own local tax on top, so where you register decides your final rate — up to roughly 8.375% in Clark County.

How it works

The math is a straightforward percentage of the purchase price:

sales tax = purchase price x combined county rate
total = purchase price + sales tax

The combined rate is the 6.85% state base plus local options. A few examples of combined rates:

  • Clark County (Las Vegas): ~8.375%
  • Washoe County (Reno): ~8.265%
  • Carson City: ~7.6%
  • Lowest-rate counties: ~6.85%

Unlike some states, Nevada does not subtract a trade-in allowance before taxing, so the full negotiated price is the tax base on a dealer sale.

Worked example

A $32,000 car purchased and registered in Clark County:

  • Combined rate: 8.375%
  • Sales tax: $32,000 x 0.08375 = $2,680
  • All-in cost (before registration): $34,680

Tips and notes

  • Private sales differ. Casual private-party sales between individuals are generally not subject to Nevada sales tax — but you still owe registration and the Governmental Services Tax.
  • Confirm the rate. County rates change; verify the current combined rate with the Nevada Department of Taxation.
  • Registration is separate. This covers the one-time sales tax only; use a Nevada registration calculator for the recurring annual fees.
