New Mexico’s sin taxes on cigarettes and alcohol differ sharply from its neighbors, and they make up a real share of the shelf price. This calculator applies the state’s per-pack and per-gallon excise rates so you can see exactly how much tax is built into a purchase.
How it works
The tool multiplies your quantity by the correct New Mexico excise rate:
cigarettes = packs × $2.00 per pack
beer = gallons × $0.41 per gallon
wine = gallons × $1.70 per gallon
spirits = gallons × $6.06 per gallon
These are state excise rates only. Federal excise and New Mexico’s gross receipts (sales) tax apply on top and are not included in the excise figure shown.
Example and notes
A pack-a-day smoker pays about 730 dollars a year in New Mexico cigarette excise alone (365 packs at 2.00 dollars). A case of 24 beers, roughly 2.25 gallons, carries about 92 cents of state excise, while a 750 ml bottle of spirits adds about 1.20 dollars. Because spirits are taxed by the gallon at the highest rate, high-proof products carry far more excise per ounce than beer or wine. Confirm current rates with New Mexico Taxation and Revenue, as excise schedules change periodically.
