New Mexico has one of the lower state gasoline taxes in the United States, but combined with the federal excise it still adds up over a year of driving. This calculator shows the fuel tax built into each fill-up and across your annual mileage.
How it works
The tool multiplies the gallons you burn by the combined per-gallon tax:
combined rate = NM excise (0.17) + federal excise (0.184) = 0.354 / gal
per fill-up = tank gallons × combined rate
annual gallons = annual miles / miles per gallon
annual tax = annual gallons × combined rate
The state rate is roughly 17 cents and the federal rate is 18.4 cents, so each gallon carries about 35.4 cents of excise tax regardless of the pump price.
Example and notes
Driving 12,000 miles a year at 25 MPG burns 480 gallons, carrying about 170 dollars of combined fuel tax — roughly 82 dollars to New Mexico and 88 dollars to the federal government. A single 15-gallon fill includes about 5.31 dollars of tax. Minor petroleum loading fees apply on top; check current New Mexico Taxation and Revenue rates if you need exact figures.
