How does New York calculate the registration fee?

For passenger vehicles, New York charges the registration fee based on the vehicle's weight. Lighter cars pay less and heavier vehicles pay more, using a rate that scales with each 100 pounds of curb weight. This is different from states that charge a flat fee or a value-based fee.

What New York charges to register a vehicle

New York is a weight-based state for passenger vehicle registration. Rather than a flat fee or a value-based fee, the DMV scales the registration charge to your car’s curb weight — so a compact car costs less to register than a large SUV or pickup. On top of that weight fee sit a small set of predictable charges: a one-time $50 title fee, a plate fee, and, if you live in the New York City metro area, a supplemental MCTD fee. This calculator adds them up so you know what to expect at the DMV.

How it works

The core of the calculation is the weight fee. New York charges a rate per 100 pounds of vehicle weight for the two-year registration term. The tool divides your entered weight by 100, multiplies by the per-hundredweight rate, and applies a small minimum so very light vehicles still pay a baseline amount.

weight fee = max(minimum, (weight_lbs / 100) × rate_per_cwt) × term_factor
total = weight fee + title fee + plate fee + MCTD supplement (if applicable)

The MCTD supplemental fee is a flat add-on for vehicles registered in New York City and the seven surrounding counties. The title fee only applies when you first title the vehicle, so for a pure renewal you can leave it out.

Notes and example

A typical 3,400 lb sedan registered for two years outside the MCTD region pays roughly the two-year weight fee plus the plate fee. Add the $50 title fee if it is a first-time title, and add the MCTD supplement if you register in the city or a metro county. Heavier vehicles climb steadily because every extra 100 lbs adds to the fee.
