Registering a vehicle in North Dakota is refreshingly simple: the annual fee depends on the vehicle’s weight and age, and there is no value-based tax on top. This calculator estimates your registration, title, and any county fees so you can budget for the visit to the DOT.
How it works
The state DOT fee schedule sets a base annual fee by weight band, then steps it down as the vehicle ages:
weight band → base fee for ages 1-3, 4-6, and 7+ years
title fee → $5 one-time on ownership change
total → base + title (if any) + county add-on
A heavier vehicle in a higher weight band pays a larger base fee, but every band gets cheaper once the vehicle crosses the 3-year and 6-year age thresholds. Motorcycles pay a single flat fee regardless of age.
Example
A mid-size car in the 3,201 to 4,800 pound band that is 2 years old falls in the 1-to-3-year tier, so the base registration is about 114 dollars. With no title change and no county add-on, that is the full annual cost — North Dakota adds no value tax on top.
Notes
These are representative figures, not a quote. North Dakota does not levy an annual ad valorem tax on vehicles, but it does charge a one-time 5 percent motor-vehicle excise tax when you buy. Special plates, permits, and county fees can change the total. Confirm exact amounts with the North Dakota Department of Transportation.
