Oklahoma’s sales tax is a layered system: a 4.5% state base rate plus county and city surcharges that push the combined rate well into double digits in some areas. This calculator adds those layers together and handles the 2024 change that removed the state portion of grocery tax, so you can see the exact tax and final price on any purchase.
How it works
The combined sales tax rate is the sum of three layers:
Combined rate = State rate + County rate + City rate
- State rate. 4.5% on most goods. For groceries, the state portion drops to 0% (a 2024 change), but local taxes still apply.
- County rate. Varies by county, typically 0.5% to 2%.
- City rate. Varies by municipality, often 2% to 4.5%.
The combined rate is multiplied by the pre-tax price to get the tax, which is added to the price for your total at the register.
Tips and example
A $100 non-grocery purchase in Oklahoma City (combined ≈ 8.625%) adds $8.63 in tax for a $108.63 total. The same $100 in groceries removes only the 4.5% state share, so you’d pay the local rate (≈ 4.125%) — about $4.13 instead.
Use the city presets for quick estimates, but enter your exact county and city rates for the most accurate result, since rates vary even between neighboring towns.
