Salt Lake City applies a combined sales tax rate of 7.75% that stacks Utah’s 4.85% state rate with Salt Lake County and transit district add-ons. Utah is unusual in that unprepared grocery food is taxed at a much lower combined rate of about 3%. This free calculator applies the correct rate by item type so you get the exact tax and total on any purchase.
How it works
The calculation is straightforward once you pick the rate:
- General merchandise —
tax = amount * 0.0775. - Grocery food (unprepared) —
tax = amount * 0.03, Utah’s reduced food rate. - Total =
amount + tax.
The 7.75% figure combines the Utah state base of 4.85% with local county and transit portions; the grocery rate is set lower by state law for unprepared food.
Example
A $120 general purchase: tax is 120 * 0.0775 = $9.30, for a total of $129.30. The same $120 spent on groceries: tax is 120 * 0.03 = $3.60, total $123.60 — a meaningful saving on food.
Notes
This uses the standard Salt Lake City combined rate. Special tax districts, resort areas, and nearby cities can differ slightly, and prepared or restaurant food carries an extra local restaurant tax.
