A starship’s name carries its whole reputation. ISS Vindicator sounds like it has won battles; the freighter Patient Mule sounds like it has hauled cargo across a dozen systems without complaint. This generator blends naval tradition with science-fiction flavour to name warships, freighters, and scouts that fit any fleet.
How it works
The tool first picks a word pool based on the class you select. Warships draw on forceful words (Vindicator, Dauntless, Nemesis), freighters on workmanlike ones (Long Haul, Workhorse, Far Trader), and scouts on exploratory ones (Wayfarer, Stargazer, Outrider). It then rolls a name pattern: a hull prefix plus the core word (ISS Vindicator), a prefix with a registry number (NCC-4471 Pathfinder), or, occasionally, a poetic full-phrase name in the style of the Culture novels (The Edge of Forever). Selecting “Any” blends all three pools so a mixed fleet roster stays varied.
Tips and example
- Match the prefix to a faction. Reserve one prefix such as UNS for the player’s navy and another for rivals to make allegiances readable on a fleet sheet.
- Use registry numbers for mass-produced hulls and bare names for unique flagships, signalling a ship’s importance at a glance.
- Save the poetic names for special vessels; a single ship called The Whisper of the Void stands out more when its fleetmates use conventional names.
Notes
Each class pool plus the prefix and number variations yields hundreds of distinct names. Every batch is de-duplicated before display.
