South Dakota charges a 4.2% statewide sales tax, and most incorporated cities add a municipal sales tax of up to 2% on top. This calculator combines both into a single rate, then shows the exact tax and final price for any purchase. South Dakota is notable for taxing groceries and many services at the same rate as other goods.
How it works
The math is a straightforward two-layer rate applied to the pre-tax price:
combined rate = state 4.2% + municipal rate
tax = price × (combined rate / 100)
total = price + tax
- State rate. Every taxable sale in South Dakota carries the 4.2% state rate.
- Municipal rate. Cities add their own rate (commonly 1.5% to 2%). Selecting a city loads a representative combined rate; you can override it.
- No grocery carve-out. South Dakota taxes most food, so the same combined rate applies to groceries.
Tips and example
A $100 purchase in a city with a 2% municipal rate is taxed at the combined 6.2% rate, adding $6.20 for a $106.20 total. The same item bought in an unincorporated area with no municipal tax is taxed only at the 4.2% state rate, adding $4.20.
City presets are representative and change over time. Always confirm the current municipal rate with the South Dakota Department of Revenue for binding figures, and override the rate field for your exact location.
