How do I calculate square footage?

Multiply the length by the width in feet. A room 12 ft by 10 ft is 12 × 10 = 120 square feet. For a rectangular space, that single multiplication is all you need.

The Square Footage Calculator works out the area of a rectangular space in both square feet and square metres, and can estimate material or labour cost from a price you enter. It is built for flooring, tiling, painting, turf, carpet and any job priced by area.

The calculation

Area of a rectangle is length times width:

area = length × width

A room 12 ft by 10 ft is 12 × 10 = 120 square feet. Measuring in metres works the same way and the tool converts between the two using the exact factor of 10.7639 square feet per square metre.

Several rooms at once

Set the “number of areas” field to total up identical spaces — four matching bedrooms, say — without adding them by hand. For an L-shaped or irregular room, split it into rectangles, calculate each, and add the results.

Estimating cost

Enter a price per square foot (or per square metre) and the tool multiplies it by the total area. Because the currency follows the number you type, it works for any market — enter your local unit price from a quote or product listing.

Order a little extra

Flooring and tile come in whole boxes and always generate offcuts, so add about 10% to the measured area before buying. Paint coverage depends on the surface and number of coats, so check the tin’s stated coverage against your total square footage.
