Spelling numbers in Tamil is more involved than swapping digits for words, because Tamil number names change shape when they combine. This free tool converts any whole number up to just under one crore into its standard Tamil cardinal form, using the Indian lakh and crore grouping and the correct combining forms throughout.
How it works
The number is split into the Indian groups — crore, lakh, thousand, and the final group of up to three digits. Each group of one to three digits is converted with dedicated tables:
- Units 1–9 use names such as
ஒன்று,இரண்டு,மூன்று. - The teens 10–19 are irregular and stored explicitly, for example
பதினொன்றுfor eleven andபதினைந்துfor fifteen. - Tens have two forms: a standalone form like
இருபதுfor twenty, and a prefix form likeஇருபத்திused before a unit, so twenty-three isஇருபத்தி மூன்று. - Hundreds also have standalone and prefix forms, so 100 is
நூறுbut 105 begins withநூற்றி.
The group values are then joined to their scale words — ஆயிரம், லட்சம், and கோடி — with the thousand group taking the combining form ஆயிரத்தி when a remainder follows.
Tips and example
Writing amounts out in words is common on cheques and in legal documents, where the written form prevents tampering. For 2026 the tool produces இரண்டு ஆயிரத்தி இருபத்தி ஆறு, and for 250000 it produces இரண்டு லட்சம் ஐம்பதாயிரம் style grouping with the lakh scale.
If the box shows the guidance message, check that you entered a whole number within range — decimals and values of a crore or larger are out of scope for this converter.
