What goes into a Texas registration bill
Texas keeps vehicle registration simple: instead of taxing your car by its value, the state charges a flat base fee by vehicle class and weight, then layers on a few small statewide and county fees. This tool estimates both your annual renewal cost and your first-year total, which adds the one-time title application fee.
How it works
The base annual registration fee is set by class:
- Passenger cars and light trucks up to 6,000 lbs:
$50.75 - Light trucks 6,001–10,000 lbs:
$54.00 - Motorcycles and mopeds:
$30.00
On top of the base, the calculator adds the standard statewide fees — a $1.00 automation fee, a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee, and a $1.50 child safety fee — plus your local county road and bridge fee (up to $10). When you check the first-registration box, it also adds the $33.00 title application fee for your first-year total.
Tips and notes
- Sales tax (6.25%) on a vehicle purchase is paid separately at titling — it is not part of annual registration. Use the related Texas car sales tax calculator for that figure.
- County fees vary; the $10 default is the typical maximum local road and bridge fee. Check your county tax office for the exact amount.
- Specialty and personalized plates carry additional charges not modeled here. Verify final totals at txdmv.gov.
