Calculate Tucson sales tax
This tool computes the combined transaction privilege (sales) tax on a purchase in Tucson, Arizona. The combined rate of about 8.7% layers the Arizona state rate, the Pima County rate, and the City of Tucson rate.
How it works
The tax is the purchase amount multiplied by the rate, then added back to the price for the total:
taxable = exempt ? 0 : amount
tax = taxable * (rate / 100)
total = amount + tax
The 8.7% combined rate breaks down as 5.6% state + 0.5% Pima County + 2.6% city.
Example
A $100 taxable purchase at 8.7% adds $8.70 of tax, for a total of $108.70.
A qualifying unprepared grocery purchase is exempt, so tax is $0 and the total
equals the price.
Notes
Arizona’s TPT is technically a tax on the seller’s gross receipts, but it is almost always passed through to the buyer at checkout. Rates vary by exact location code and special districts, so override the default when you know your precise rate. Confirm current rates with the Arizona Department of Revenue.
