How much rent can you actually afford in Tucson, and is that listing you found a fair deal? This calculator applies the standard 30%-of-income budgeting rule to your income and compares any rent you are weighing against Tucson’s roughly $1,000 median one-bedroom rent.

How it works

The affordable rent ceiling is simply 30% of your gross monthly income. For a specific listing, the rent-to-income ratio is the listing rent divided by your monthly income:

affordable rent ceiling = monthly income × 0.30
rent-to-income ratio = listing rent ÷ monthly income

Housing guidelines classify a ratio at or below 0.30 as affordable, between 0.30 and 0.50 as rent-burdened, and above 0.50 as severely rent-burdened. The tool also compares the listing to the local median so you can tell whether the price is typical for Tucson.

Example and notes

If you earn $3,500 per month, your 30%-rule ceiling is $1,050, which comfortably covers a typical Tucson one-bedroom near the $1,000 median. A $1,400 listing would push your ratio to 40%, flagging you as rent-burdened. Remember that this counts base rent only. Tucson’s hot summers can add a substantial cooling bill, so leave headroom for utilities on top of the figures shown here.
