UK council tax depends on your property’s valuation band and your local authority’s Band D rate. This calculator applies the statutory band ratios to your council’s Band D charge to estimate your annual and monthly bill.
How it works
Each band is a fixed fraction of the Band D charge, set in ninths:
A = 6/9 B = 7/9 C = 8/9 D = 9/9
E = 11/9 F = 13/9 G = 15/9 H = 18/9
So a Band A home pays about 0.6667 of Band D, and a Band H home pays exactly double. Multiply your council’s Band D rate by your band’s ratio to get the full charge, then apply the 25% single-person discount if only one adult lives there.
Example
With a council Band D rate of £2,200 and a Band C property, the ratio is 8/9 (about 0.8889), giving £1,955.56 a year — roughly £162.96 a month over 12, or £195.56 over the usual 10 instalments. A single occupant would knock 25% off, paying about £1,466.67.
Notes
Estimate only, not financial advice. Council tax for each band is a statutory proportion of the Band D charge (A = 6/9 to H = 18/9), but the actual amount depends on your local authority’s Band D rate, which bundles in police and fire precepts. Wales has different bands and Scotland different ratios. Confirm your band and rate with your local authority.
