Utah layers a 4.85% statewide base sales tax with county, city, and special-district local options, producing combined rates that usually land near 7.2% but range from about 6.1% to over 9%. Unprepared groceries get a break: they are taxed at a reduced combined 3%. This calculator estimates the tax and total for any Utah purchase.
How it works
The combined rate is the sum of the state base and all local components:
combined rate = state base (4.85%) + county + city + special district
tax = price x combined rate
total = price + tax
For grocery food, Utah overrides the standard combined rate with a flat reduced rate of 3% (1.75% state plus 1.25% uniform local), regardless of city. Prepared and restaurant food does not qualify and is taxed at the full combined rate.
Tips and example
Pick a city to load a representative combined rate, or choose Custom and type the exact rate from your receipt or the Utah State Tax Commission lookup for your address. A $100 standard purchase in a 7.75% city costs $7.75 in tax for a $107.75 total. The same $100 in groceries is taxed at 3%, just $3.00, showing how much the reduced food rate saves on essentials.
Rates change as transit and infrastructure districts adjust, so treat city presets as close estimates and verify with the Custom field when precision matters.
