Utah keeps vehicle registration simple by charging an age-based uniform fee instead of a value-based property tax for most passenger cars. This calculator adds that uniform fee to the flat registration fee and the small mandatory fees to estimate what you will pay at renewal each year.
How it works
Utah’s age-based uniform fee depends only on how old the vehicle is, measured from its model year. The 2024 schedule for passenger vehicles is:
under 3 years $150
3 to under 6 $110
6 to under 9 $80
9 to under 12 $50
12 years and over $10
On top of the uniform fee, Utah charges a flat passenger registration fee of about 44 dollars, a 1 dollar uninsured motorist identification fee, and an optional county fee that varies by county. The total is the sum of all of these.
Example
A 4-year-old sedan falls in the “3 to under 6” tier, so its uniform fee is 110 dollars. Add the 44 dollar registration fee and the 1 dollar uninsured motorist fee, plus any county option fee, and the annual cost lands around 155 dollars before local add-ons.
Notes
This estimator covers standard passenger vehicles using the age-based uniform fee. Motorhomes and some other classes use a percentage-of-value uniform fee instead, and plate, emissions, and county charges vary. Confirm your exact amount with the Utah DMV at dmv.utah.gov.
