This Vietnam tipping calculator and guide helps you tip appropriately in a country where tipping is not traditional but increasingly appreciated in tourism. Enter your bill, pick the service type, and it suggests a sensible amount.
How it works
Vietnam has no compulsory tipping culture. This tool applies light, tourist-friendly norms by setting:
- Restaurant (upscale / tourist): around 5-10% where no service charge applies.
- Local eatery: rounding up is plenty — no percentage expected.
- Hotel porter / housekeeping: a small fixed amount, often VND20,000-50,000.
- Spa / guide / driver: a modest appreciation tip.
You can choose a percentage tip or round up to a convenient note, and split the final total across your group.
Example
A tourist restaurant bill of VND 800,000 with a 10% tip adds VND 80,000, for a total of VND 880,000. Split between two people, that is VND 440,000 each.
Notes
Tips are always optional in Vietnam — never feel pressured. Check the bill for an existing service charge before adding more. Cash in dong, handed directly to staff, is best, since card tips frequently do not reach the worker. Small gestures of appreciation go a long way and are warmly received.
