Registering a vehicle in Virginia involves a weight-based annual fee plus, for new titlings, a one-time title fee and plate cost. This calculator estimates the DMV total so you know what to expect before you go.
How it works
Virginia’s base annual registration fee depends on vehicle type and weight:
Passenger ≤ 4,000 lbs : $30.75 / year
Passenger > 4,000 lbs : $35.75 / year
Motorcycle : $24.75 / year
Title fee (one-time) : $15 (new titlings only)
For a new title, add the 15-dollar title fee and a plate fee once; for renewals, only the annual registration applies. Multi-year registration multiplies the annual fee by the number of years. Electric and fuel-efficient vehicles owe an additional highway use fee or EV fee not included in this base estimate.
Example
Titling a 3,800-pound sedan new to Virginia for one year costs 30.75 dollars registration plus the 15-dollar title fee — about 45.75 dollars before plates. A two-year renewal of the same car would be 61.50 dollars with no title fee.
Notes
Fees shown are the common state DMV base amounts and can change; specialty or personalized plates, the highway use fee, and any local registration surcharge are extra. Always confirm current fees and EV/highway-use charges at dmv.virginia.gov.
