Estimate your West Virginia DMV registration cost
West Virginia keeps vehicle registration simple: a flat annual fee by vehicle class rather than a value- or weight-based formula. This calculator adds that registration fee to the title fee and required surcharges so you can budget your trip to the DMV.
How it works
The total at the counter is a sum of fixed fees:
Total = Registration fee (by class)
+ Title fee ($15, if titling/transferring)
+ Reflectorization fee (~$1.50)
+ License/IT surcharge (~$1.00)
+ Optional plate transfer fee
Registration fees by class are roughly: passenger car $51.50/year, motorcycle $50.00/year, and light truck (Class A) $51.50/year. Heavier trucks rise with weight on the DMV’s commercial schedule. Because West Virginia uses flat fees, your car’s age and value do not change the registration amount.
Example and notes
Titling and registering a passenger car for the first time:
Registration: $51.50
Title fee: $15.00
Reflectorization: $1.50
License/IT fee: $1.00
DMV total: $69.00
Notes: a simple renewal (no new title) skips the $15 title fee. The separate 5% titling privilege tax on the purchase price is not included here — calculate it with the WV car sales tax tool. County or specialty-plate add-ons may apply. Confirm current figures on the WV DMV fee schedule.
