How much should I tip in a restaurant in Argentina?

Around 10% is the customary propina for good table service in Argentina, rising toward 15% at upscale restaurants. Tipping is appreciated but not legally required, and the tip is usually left in cash even when you pay the bill by card.

This Argentina tipping calculator takes the guesswork out of the propina. Argentine tipping is more modest than in the United States: around 10% for good restaurant service, a little more at upscale venues, and a simple round-up for taxis. Enter your bill, choose the setting, and the tool suggests an appropriate tip and splits the total.

How it works

For a percentage tip the maths is simple:

tip = bill × (percentage ÷ 100), and total = bill + tip, divided by the number of people for the per-person share.

You can also choose to round up to a convenient amount instead of a percentage, which is the norm for taxis and small cafe bills. The suggested percentage updates automatically when you change the service type.

Example

A dinner bill of ARS 40,000 at a mid-range restaurant warrants about 10%, or ARS 4,000, for a total of ARS 44,000. Split between two people, that is ARS 22,000 each. Leave the ARS 4,000 in cash on the table.

Notes

Tipping in Argentina is genuinely optional and never replaces a fair wage — it is a thank-you for good service. Watch for a cubierto (cover charge) on the bill, which is not a tip. Cash in pesos is preferred because card tips often do not reach staff.
