The Arizona Cigarette & Alcohol Tax Calculator shows the excise (sin) tax built into tobacco and alcohol purchases in Arizona. The state charges $2.00 per pack of cigarettes and per-gallon alcohol rates of $0.16 (beer), $0.84 (wine), and $3.00 (spirits). The tool also estimates the federal cigarette excise of about $1.01 per pack.
How it works
Each product type has its own Arizona rate applied to quantity:
cigarettes: packs x $2.00 (state) + packs x $1.01 (federal)
beer: gallons x $0.16
wine: gallons x $0.84
spirits: gallons x $3.00
Excise tax is charged on volume, not price, so it is the same regardless of the brand. It is built into the shelf price; Arizona’s transaction privilege (sales) tax is then applied separately at checkout.
Example and notes
A carton of cigarettes (10 packs):
state: 10 x $2.00 = $20.00
federal: 10 x $1.01 = $10.10
combined: $30.10
One gallon of spirits: 1 x $3.00 = $3.00 Arizona excise.
- Excise is per unit/volume — it does not change with the product’s price.
- Sales tax applies on top of these per-unit excise taxes at the register.
- A 750 ml bottle is about 0.198 gallons; 5 bottles make roughly a gallon. Runs in your browser.
