A cm to feet and inches converter that gives you a real height — like 5 ft 7 in —
instead of the decimal feet (5.58 ft) that most length converters return. Type a value in
centimetres and read the whole feet-and-inches form straight away, or enter feet and inches
to get the centimetres back. It works in both directions and shows the total inches and
metres alongside.
How it works
An inch has been defined as exactly 2.54 cm since the international yard-and-pound agreement of 1959, and a foot is exactly 12 inches (30.48 cm). To convert centimetres to a height, the tool divides by 2.54 to get the total number of inches, takes the whole number of feet (each 12 inches), and leaves the remainder as inches. Going the other way, it multiplies feet by 30.48 and inches by 2.54 and adds them.
The inches are rounded to one decimal place for readability. If that rounding pushes the inches up to a full 12, the tool carries it to the next whole foot — so 179.9 cm reads as 5 ft 11 in rather than 5 ft 12 in. Everything is computed in your browser with fixed factors, so nothing you type is uploaded.
Worked example
Say you want to know what 175 cm is in feet and inches. Enter 175: the tool divides by
2.54 to get 68.90 inches, takes 5 whole feet (60 inches), and leaves 8.9 inches — so 175 cm
is 5 ft 8.9 in, usually written 5 ft 9 in. It also shows 68.9 in total and 1.75 m. Type
5 feet and 9 inches into the other fields and the centimetres read back as 175.26 cm.
