How long should I boil an egg?

For a large egg lowered into already-boiling water, roughly 4 minutes gives a soft runny yolk, 6 minutes a jammy centre, 8 minutes a soft-set yolk, and 10 to 12 minutes a fully hard-boiled egg.

The Egg Timer gives you one-tap presets for every level of boiled-egg doneness, from a runny soft-boiled egg to a firm hard-boiled one, plus a custom countdown for anything else in the kitchen. A large readout and an audible alarm mean you will not overcook your eggs.

Boiled egg times at a glance

These times are for a large egg lowered into water that is already at a rolling boil:

ResultTimeYolk
Soft (runny)4 minLiquid yolk, set white
Soft-medium6 minJammy, slightly runny centre
Medium8 minFully set white, soft yolk
Hard10 minFirm yolk, classic hard-boiled
Very hard12 minFully firm, good for slicing

How to use it

Tap a doneness preset to load its time, then press Start. The countdown fills a progress bar as it goes, and when it hits zero the readout turns green and the alarm beeps. For anything other than eggs, type a number of minutes into the custom field and press Set timer.

Tips for perfect eggs

Lower eggs gently into boiling water and start the timer once the water returns to a boil, since the times assume a rolling boil throughout. When the alarm sounds, move the eggs straight into cold water to stop the cooking and make them easier to peel. Keep this tab open and your volume up so the alarm reaches you.
