How long should I hold a plank?

Many programmes start around 20 to 30 seconds and build up gradually, adding a little time each week. Holding a strong, well-aligned plank for a shorter time is better than sagging through a longer one.

The Plank Timer is a count-up timer built for plank holds and other core exercises. Pick a target, get into position, and watch the seconds climb — with a progress bar tracking your goal and a beep the moment you reach it.

Why count up

Unlike a countdown, a count-up timer lets you push past your target when you have more left in the tank. The beep and green readout tell you the instant you hit your goal, but the clock keeps running so you can set a new personal best. The tool records your longest hold of the session at the bottom.

Building your plank

A common approach is to start at a comfortable 20 to 30 seconds and add a little time each week. Quality matters more than raw duration: a straight line from head to heels, braced core, and steady breathing beat a longer hold that sags in the middle. If your form starts to break down, that is the time to stop rather than chase the clock.

Using the presets

The one-tap presets cover the most common goals from 30 seconds up to 5 minutes, and a No target option turns the tool into a plain count-up stopwatch for any exercise. You can pause and resume at any point if you need to reset your position.
