What this tool does
The IELTS to CEFR Level Converter translates your overall IELTS band into a level on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), from A1 to C2. Many visa routes, universities, and employers ask for a CEFR level rather than an IELTS number, and this tool gives you the aligned answer to quote on application forms.
How it works
Cambridge English publishes an alignment between IELTS bands and CEFR levels. The tool maps your overall band into the appropriate level band:
4.0 - 5.0 -> B1 (intermediate)
5.5 - 6.5 -> B2 (upper intermediate)
7.0 - 8.0 -> C1 (advanced)
8.5 - 9.0 -> C2 (mastery / proficiency)
Bands below 4.0 fall into A1-A2, the basic-user range. The mapping is an indicative alignment rather than an exact conversion, because IELTS and the CEFR describe ability on different scales — so treat the level as a close guide.
Tips and notes
Most university programs ask for B2 or C1, which lines up with overall IELTS bands of about 5.5-6.5 and 7.0-8.0 respectively. If an application specifically requires a CEFR level, quote the one produced here but keep your IELTS test report to hand, since some institutions want to see the underlying band as well. Remember the mapping is approximate: a given band sits near a CEFR boundary, so confirm the exact requirement with the institution if you are close to a level threshold.
