A compliant Australian tax invoice in under a minute
Australian Taxation Office (ATO) rules are specific about what a valid tax invoice must contain — the words “Tax invoice”, your ABN, the GST amount, and the buyer’s identity for larger sales. This builder includes every required field, calculates the 10% GST correctly whether your prices are inclusive or exclusive of GST, and adds BSB and account number fields so customers can pay you by EFT.
How it works
GST in Australia is a flat 10%. The tool supports two modes:
- GST-exclusive prices: each line price is the pre-tax amount. GST equals
subtotal × 0.10, and the total issubtotal + GST. - GST-inclusive prices: each line price already contains GST. The GST component is extracted as
total ÷ 11(because the total is 110% of the pre-tax value), and the displayed subtotal istotal − GST.
It sums your line items (quantity × unit price), applies any optional discount before GST, then derives the GST line and grand total. For sales of A$1,000 or more the customer’s identity is required, so a reminder appears when the total crosses that threshold.
Tips and notes
- Always show your 11-digit ABN — without it, customers must withhold 47% of the payment under the “no ABN withholding” rule.
- The phrase “Tax invoice” must appear; this tool puts it at the top of the output automatically.
- Use GST-inclusive mode for retail/consumer pricing, and GST-exclusive for B2B quotes where buyers expect the pre-tax figure.
- BSB codes are six digits, usually written
XXX-XXX; the tool keeps whatever format you enter.
