Great science fiction makes its aliens feel like they evolved on a different world, and that starts with how their name sounds. This generator builds species names from xenolinguistic phonology profiles and pairs each with a homeworld and a physical hint.
How it works
Choose a phonology profile, which selects three sound pools: an onset (opening consonant cluster), a nucleus (vowel core), and a coda (ending). The generator chains one to three syllables to build a pronounceable name, then capitalises it. Harsh profiles draw on guttural clusters like Kr and Thr for warrior races; sibilant profiles use hissing sounds like Ss and Zh for reptilian or insectoid species; melodic profiles use flowing consonants like L and Ae for graceful, ancient beings. A homeworld designation and a physical descriptor complete the set.
Tips and notes
- Match the phonology to the species’ culture: harsh sounds read as aggressive, melodic sounds as refined or telepathic.
- The descriptor is a starting hint, not a rule — adapt the limb count or biology to fit your story’s ecology.
- Keep generated homeworlds in a glossary so star-system names stay consistent across an entire series or campaign.
