A guild gives players something to belong to, work for, or fear — and its name sets the tone before any member speaks. A merchant guild should sound respectable and moneyed; a thieves guild should sound like a secret you were not meant to know. This tool weights its word lists by guild type so each name lands in the right register.
How it works
You choose a guild type, and the generator pulls from a matching pool of theme words, then wraps them in one of several authentic guild frames: the X of Y, the X Company, the X League, or a possessive the Y's X. Merchant names draw on trade and craft vocabulary, thieves names on shadow and secrecy, mage names on the arcane and scholarly, and adventurer names on courage and steel. Each batch is de-duplicated so every name in a list is unique.
Tips and example
- Match the frame to the culture. League and Company read as formal and chartered; Hand, Circle, and Compact read as older or secretive.
- Give rival guilds contrasting frames — the Goldhand League versus the Whispered Hand instantly signals respectable versus criminal.
- A guild’s name can foreshadow its secret. The Arcanum of the Veil hints at hidden knowledge the players might one day uncover.
