Names for fictional magic systems and schools

A memorable magic system needs a name with weight — something that sounds like scholars argued over it for centuries. Real esoteric traditions borrowed heavily from Latin and Greek, which is why words like alchemy and necromancy still carry an air of hidden knowledge. This tool mines those same roots and recombines them into invented disciplines, schools, and arts.

How it works

The discipline mode pairs an evocative element root (aether, umbra, ignis, sanguine) with a craft word (weaving, binding, resonance) to produce names like Aetheric Weaving. The school and order mode wraps a noble institutional frame (the College of, the Order of, the Circle of) around a thematic phrase. The -mancy mode follows the Greek divination pattern, attaching the -mancy suffix to an element root so you get arts such as umbramancy or chronomancy. Each batch is de-duplicated so repeated clicks keep producing new combinations.

Tips and example

  • Name the discipline first, then derive the school from it — Sanguine Binding studied at the Crimson Conclave links the art and its keepers.
  • The -mancy forms read as common, almost academic; ornate school names read as exclusive and old. Mix them to imply a hierarchy of magic.
  • Keep your most powerful art slightly plainer than the rest — understatement reads as confidence in fiction.
