Why are 1 and 2 written as одна and дві?

Both гривня and копійка are feminine nouns, so the numerals 1 and 2 must take their feminine forms одна and дві. That is why the tool produces одна гривня and дві копійки rather than the masculine один, два.

The Ukrainian Currency in Words tool turns a hryvnia figure into the wording used on invoices, cheques, and contracts. It spells the whole hryvnias in full Ukrainian words and writes the kopecks as two digits, while keeping the grammar correct for both feminine currency nouns.

How it works

The amount is parsed into whole hryvnias and a 0–99 kopeck remainder, rounding to the nearest kopeck. The hryvnia count is spelled group by group (units, thousands, millions) using Ukrainian numeral tables. Because the noun гривня is feminine, the units and thousands groups use the feminine forms of 1 and 2 (одна, дві). The currency word itself is then chosen by the 1-2-5 rule: гривня for amounts ending in 1 (but not 11), гривні for 2–4 endings, and гривень otherwise. The same rule selects копійка / копійки / копійок for the kopeck word that follows the two-digit kopeck figure.

Notes and example

  • 1 234,56 ₴ becomes одна тисяча двісті тридцять чотири гривні 56 копійок.
  • A round amount like 200,00 yields двісті гривень 00 копійок — the kopecks are always padded to two digits.
  • The hryvnia sign ₴ and any thousands spaces are stripped before parsing, so a pasted figure such as 1 000 000,00 is handled correctly.
  • For exact accounting wording, copy the result directly: it already matches the “words for hryvnias, digits for kopecks” convention.
