Traditional to Simplified Chinese Converter

Convert Traditional Chinese text to Simplified Chinese characters.

Free Traditional to Simplified Chinese converter. Maps Traditional characters to their Simplified equivalents instantly using an OpenCC-derived reverse table, with a count of changed characters. Runs entirely in your browser.

Why is Traditional to Simplified conversion described as lossy?

Several distinct Traditional characters were merged into a single Simplified character. For example 麵 (noodles) and 麪 both map to 面, which also already means face. Going from Traditional to Simplified therefore discards a distinction, and the reverse direction cannot always recover the original.

The Traditional to Simplified Chinese Converter rewrites Traditional text — as used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau — into the Simplified characters standard in mainland China. Paste a passage and each differing character switches to its Simplified form while shared characters stay put, making it handy for localisation, study, subtitles and cross-strait communication.

How it works

The tool carries an embedded Traditional-to-Simplified table derived from the open-source OpenCC project. It scans your text one character at a time: characters present in the reverse table are replaced with their Simplified equivalent, and everything else is left intact. Since most characters are common to both scripts, only the few hundred that truly differ are changed, and a counter shows how many substitutions were made.

Notes and limitations

Traditional-to-Simplified conversion is inherently lossy in places because Simplified Chinese merged several originally distinct Traditional characters into one. For instance both (noodles) and the surname-era variant collapse onto , which also means face. When more than one Traditional character maps to the same Simplified one, this converter uses the most common mapping. The conversion is also character-level, so it does not automatically swap regional vocabulary — a Taiwan term like 軟體 becomes 軟体-style characters rather than the mainland word 软件. Proofread specialised vocabulary for natural mainland phrasing after converting. All processing happens locally in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and the tool works offline once loaded.
