How does the FLAMES game actually work?

You write both names, strike out every letter that appears in both of them one occurrence at a time, and count the letters that remain. Then you cycle through the six letters of FLAMES, removing one letter each time you count round by that number, until a single letter survives. That letter maps to Friends, Love, Affection, Marriage, Enemies or Siblings.

The playground classic, now instant

FLAMES is the name game generations of schoolchildren have played in the margins of their notebooks. Write two names, cross out the letters they share, count what is left, and cycle that number through the word FLAMES until a single letter survives. This tool does the crossing-out and counting for you and reveals whether the pair lands on Friends, Love, Affection, Marriage, Enemies or Siblings.

Why the same names always match

Unlike a random love meter, FLAMES is fully deterministic. The result depends only on which letters the two names share and how many remain, so entering the same pair will always give you the same answer. That predictability is exactly why it spread by word of mouth — everyone in the playground got the same result, so it felt like a shared secret rather than a coin toss.

Just for fun

FLAMES is fortune-telling for the lunch break, not relationship science. The categories are a game, and the only thing the letters really measure is spelling. Enjoy it as a bit of nostalgia, compare a few names, and take the verdict in the lighthearted spirit it was invented in.
